Alibaba Launches 5G Live Broadcast at 'Double Twelve' Shopping Festival
Alibaba is said to invest 10 billion yuan in 5G live broadcast over the next few years.
Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. (NYSE: BABA) has kickstarted its live broadcast powered by 5G networks at its "Double Twelve" shopping festival in Guangdong province.
Joined by 5G provider China Unicom, the e-commerce giant has tested its live broadcasting technology at the jewelry center in Sihui city and Zhuji city in Zhejiang province on Wednesday. More than 400 merchants displayed their products using the technology.
"The outbreak of Taobao mall live broadcast is a milestone event in the new consuming era. In the future, stores and live broadcast rooms will merge into one," De Xuan, the general manager of Taobao Content E-commerce Division, said at a conference in November.

Alibaba has set a new record on Singles' Day sale in November, with gross merchandise volume reaching $38.4 billion, with Taobao Live as one of the most important growth engines. Taobao Live fueled transactions of nearly 20 billion yuan during Singles' Day sales.
Xuan said that Alibaba will invest more than 10 billion yuan in live broadcasting in the future. Alibaba aims to provide professional training and incentives for its partners including merchants and institutions, to jointly develop the 5G live broadcast ecosystem within two years, Xuan added.
During the "Double Twelve" shopping festival, more than 10,000 Taobao live broadcasts have been delivered, as reported by various Chinese media.
On Wednesday, the stock in Alibaba closed up 2%, at $204.64 per American depositary share.
