China's Social Platform TikTok Launches Edu Tok in India
China’s short video giant TikTok takes expansion to e-learning as a tool to develop Indian market and regain trust with local regulators.
China's TikTok released on Thursday its first educational program in India to share knowledge through videos.
According to a recent announcement, TikTok has partnered with key education technology companies in India to encourage educational videos with Edu Tok. Among the companies were edtech startups Vedantu, Vidya Guru, Hello English, CETKing and Testbook, according to a daily news publisher Hans India.
One of the highest-valued tech startup in the world, ByteDance, launched TikTok for video sharing in 2017 for markets outside China.
More than 200 million TikTok users in India can access content in social sciences, English language learning, math, Hindi, biology, chemistry, vocabulary and even post-graduate programs on the newly developed online learning platform.
Sachin Sharma, the director of sales and partnerships at TikTok, said in an interview with TechCrunch that more than 10 million educational videos have been created and shared on TikTok, attracting more than 48 billion views in recent months.
"Collaborating with TikTok has supplemented our mission as it allows us to reach the farthest corners in India and share knowledge and information with users from Tier 2 and 3 cities, while making learning fun and engaging," Anand Prakash, a co-founder of Vedantu said to Hans India.
In April, India's regulators ordered Google and Apple to take down TikTok from their online stores due to alleged distribution of pornographic material. Its parent company ByteDance reported it has deleted six million videos in India as of April.
Although TikTok has regained compliance, building the knowledge-sharing platform is expected to help ease the tensions with local authorities.
